چکیده

BACKGROUND Our aim was to determine whether lymphangiogenesis occurs in the early steps of cancerogenesis of the upper aerodigestive tract. METHODS We assessed the number of lymphatics per unit area (lymphatic vascular density [LVD]) and the percent area occupied by the lymphatic vessels (lymphatic vascular area [LVA]) by computer-assisted morphometric analysis in 56 samples immunohistochemically stained with the lymphatic marker D2-40. The results were compared to those obtained in 63 invasive squamous cell carcinomas. RESULTS No significant difference was observed between normal mucosa, hyperplasia/mild dysplasia, and moderate/severe dysplasia for LVD (p = .8) and LVA (p = .7). Conversely, invasive carcinomas presented a higher LVD than normal mucosa and precancerous lesions (p < .001), whereas there was no difference for LVA (p = .1). CONCLUSION Lymphangiogenesis does not occur in premalignant lesions of the upper aerodigestive tract and it is rather a late event associated with the development of an invasive phenotype.

Pilot study: Raman spectroscopy in differentiating premalignant and malignant oral lesions from normal mucosa and benign lesions in humans.

BACKGROUND Current practice for differentiating tissue lesions are based on histopathological criteria. This process is subject to error. The purpose of this study was to test whether an alternative, tissue-based molecular signatures Raman spectra could be used to differentiate premalignant and malignant lesions from normal mucosa or benign lesions. METHODS Eighteen treatment naive subjects w...

A transcriptional progression model for head and neck cancer.

PURPOSE A genetic progression model for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) has been established and implies the presence of transcriptional dysregulation as a consequence of accumulation of genetic alterations. Although expression array data have been provided for HNSC, the timing of transcriptional dysregulation in the progression from normal mucosa to dyplastic epithelium to invasiv...

Head and Neck Nerve Sheath Tumors: A 10-Year Evaluation in Iran

Background and Objective: Approximately 45% of benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNST) occur in head and neck regions. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) are less common and only 8-15% of these tumors occur in head and neck region. In this study, we aimed at evaluating the demographic characteristics, pathologic findings, locations, main clinical presentations and family h...

Evaluation of Culturally-Familiar Odorants for a Persian Smell Identification Test

Introduction: Processing odor information by the olfactory system depends greatly on the odor concentration. In order to use an odorant in a smell identification test (SIT), the minimum identification concentration (MIC) needs to be determined.  Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in 60 healthy native individuals aged 20 to 60 years, selected from patients’ companions in a tertiary...
